Summertime...

and the living should be easy!

Every month is VOLUNTEER AWARENESS MONTH.
Volunteer to Help Animals!

Any month is as good a time as any to start making a difference in this world.  Our local choice is Tavi & Friends.  One of their larger missions is to make TTouch more widely available in the shelter and rescue world.  By reducing the stress and fears of the animals coming into shelters and unfamiliar enviornments, these animals can be handled easier, learn to trust more readily, and hopefully be more adoptable.  Many, after losing the only home and family they have ever known, are suddenly thrust into a very scary world.  TTouch can make such a difference in their lives.  Tavi & Friends is also a breed rescue for the American Curl cat, as well as helping special animals.  Although a small rescue organization, they are still very much in need of dedicated volunteers, foster homes and donations.   www.TAVIandFRIENDS.org

To contact them:  Tavi2@earthlink.net

How does TTouch help homeless and abandoned animals in the shelter system...?

·   Reduces stress and its deleterious influence on immunity, appetite, digestion, growth, and development;

·   Deals with the mental rigidity and temperament volatility that stress creates;

·   Promote socialization and trust;

·   Manage frightened and marginally socialized animals in ways that prevent breakdown of temperament;

·   Rehabilitates fear-biters and other behaviors; helps with handling animals;

·   Provides various health promoting, function-normalizing uses, including pain management and shock reduction;

·   Facilitates the adoption process, and much more.

It's also a good time to spend more [cool] time with your pets, friends and family... and time to finally sign up for a TTouch workshop with your local practitioner!

Make JULY and AUGUST "Cool Pets" Month!

Keeping our pets cool during these hot, humid months is a challenge.  Overheating is a very real problem and we all must make sure that our pets do not succomb.  Here are a few tips to help you help your pets stay cool, comfortable, and safe during the heat of summer.

Don't leave your pets -- or children -- in a locked car.  First, it's against the law and police will issue tickets.  More importantly, the heat build up inside a car is quick -- minutes -- which can kill your pet (actually, bakes them!) or, at the very least, cause considerable health issues requiring emergency veterinary hospitalization and care (also very costly to you.)

Don't leave dogs tied up outside while you "quickly" run in for coffee or milk!  It's amazing how a "quickly running into the store" can take a much longer time than we think.  Here is what can happen even more quickly:

-- dogs run the risk of overheating (it happens fast in high temperatures)

-- dogs can be teased by passing school children

-- dogs can be stolen by professionals who 'quickly' sweep in with a van, cut the leash, and take your dog--in seconds!  Some wait for the reward poster, but many are stolen to be sold to laboratories (where they are inhumanely tortured and suffer greatly), for bait, and other unscrupulous reasons.  Our pets deserve more from us.

Buy a COOLING VEST for outside activities, or a COOL PAD for indoors.  Note: using a Cooling Vest does not mean over-extending outside activities.  Use common sense and keep a close check on how your pet is doing,  Always check the sidewalk or blacktop with your hand -- you'll be surprised at how hot it gets really fast!

Also, provide/carry sufficient water at all times.  Per Newsweek, dogs should have one ounce of water per pound of weight during high temperatures.

Walk your dog on the shady side of the street -- better for him/her and for you!

When the temperature is 90 degrees or more, best to just leave your pets inside.  It's the safest and most comfortable option for them.

July and August are... ADOPT-a-RESCUED PET Months

During the summer months, many animal shelters are filled to capacity with kittens and their moms.  Summer months are also slower adoption months.  While we all want to kick back and relax, think about bringing a new cat, dog, or other rescued pet-of-choice into your home.  With shelters at capacity, that means many will be euthanized at kill shelters, and the no-kill shelters will be max-ed out.

Looking for a specific breed of cat or dog?  Check breed rescue groups before you go out and buy!   There are also species-specific rescue groups that specialize in other companion animals, such as ferrets, bunnies, etc.
